Whirlpool was established on the 11 11 of November, 1911. It was founded in the name of Louis as well as Emory Upton under the name of Upton Machine Company. It began operations by producing motor-driven wringer washers. It also signed an agreement in partnership with Sears, Roebucks and Company to provide washing machines. In 1929 Upton Machine Company merged with Ninteen Hundred Washer Company to create Nineteen Hundred Corporation. The company launched an automatic washing machines with spin-drying technology in 1948.

Ninteen Hundred Corporation was renamed Whirlpool Corporation in the year 1950. The company began its entry into the market for air conditioners and refrigerators in the year 1955. Whirlpool expanded its business into Brazil, Mexico and Canada during the 60s and 70s. The company was introduced to India in 1987, through a collaboration together with TVS Group and formed Whirlpool of India Limited.
