Sprite was launched on the 8 October October, 1961 with The Coca-Cola Company in the United States as a lemon-lime flavoured soft drink that was caffeine-free. The history of Sprite dates back to 1959, when a lemon-lime beverage called Fanta Clare Zitrone was developed in West Germany. Coca-Cola changed the formula and rebranded the drink and eventually launched it under the name Sprite. It was Sprite trademark was purchased through Coca-Cola from a bottler in Houston in the year 1960.

Sprite has gained a lot of popularity in US as well as other countries such as United Kingdom and Australia throughout the 60s and the 70s. In the early years into the 21 21st century, Sprite expanded to many countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Different variants of Sprite such as Sprite Zero Sugar Sprite Remix Sprite Cranberry and others were introduced in this time period.
